Why are babies cute?

I paid a visit to lactation consultant Doris last Thurs to get some advice on weaning off Zhirui from breastmilk.

It's my first aquaintance with her. I'm quite amazed that she's one of the two lc in singapore doing research on breastfeeding.

She threw lots of info to me that session. Much of which I've cleanly forgotten.. :P except for this topic on 'Why are babies cute?'

Answer: For survival. (Huh??) Yes. That was precisely my reaction! If babies aren't cute, they might be neglected by their parents and not live.

As I discussed with my hubby, we draw some supporting proofs from the animal world- Animals that do not care for their young, such as snakes, frogs do not have cute babies. Just a tot, no offence to snake/frog lovers! haa..

Hmm... being a fence-sitter & sm1 who thinks too much, the notion tt babies are cute bcos of survival can be too sweeping a statement. Plus, the notion can be a BIG topic of dicussions/debates encompassing many subjects such as religions, zoology, psychology, etc.

Herez an interesting article which offers reasons (other than cuteness) why sm animals care/don care for their young

BTW, Platypus, cuckoo, turtles, tortoises and even sm pple don care for their young... just sm fruits for thoughts
